A few years ago, my cousin’s husband passed away suddenly in his sleep. He was only 41, and they later suspected an undiagnosed heart condition. What’s been sticking with me ever since is this dream I had the night he passed. To be clear, I don’t believe in the supernatural or anything like that, but this was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.

I had a very vivid dream about my cousin—who I’m not especially close to, we grew up together and attended family events, but we never had that one-on-one relationship. I’ve never had a dream about her before, or since. In the dream, I was hugging her while she sobbed uncontrollably. I was asking what was wrong, and all she said was, “I just woke up, and he was gone.” I’ve never consoled her like that, we’ve never had that kind of connection in real life.

I woke up, totally puzzled by the dream, went outside for a smoke, and checked my phone. I had an unopened text from my mom saying that my cousin’s husband had passed away that night. The message said she woke up to find his body. It was horrifying and tragic, but what really shook me was that the dream seemed to happen before I even got the news.

I tried to come up with a logical explanation—maybe I was half-awake, saw the message without opening it, and then went back to sleep. But that doesn’t add up. I’m not a heavy sleeper, and there’s no way I would’ve just ignored a text saying her husband had died. Plus, the message was marked unopened.

So, what do you think? It doesn’t make sense. We weren’t even in contact, and I’m not close to her. Why would I dream that the night her husband passed away? It still baffles me.
